OpenAI’s ‘code red’

OpenAI is credited with ushering in the era of AI popularization by releasing ChatGPT in November 2022. Since then, it has grown rapidly, recognized as the leader in AI models. However, competitors like Google and startups such as Anthropic are now rapidly advancing their AI capabilities and aggressively closing the gap with substantial capital. In response, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, declared a “code red” (critical alert) in the second half of last year. Observing the headquarters and speaking with employees, it became clear that even OpenAI, a leader in cutting-edge technology, is fighting around the clock to survive in the AI survival race, with over 4,000 staff members working tirelessly day and night.
